Fun CPR & Heart Health Facts

Knowledge is power — and in this case, it could be the power to save a life.

Your Heart Beats 100,000 Times Daily

That's roughly 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime. Your heart is the hardest-working muscle in your body — treat it right!

Every Minute Matters

For every minute without CPR, survival decreases by 7-10%. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival.

Stayin' Alive = CPR Rhythm

The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" has 100 beats per minute — the perfect tempo for CPR chest compressions! Other songs at this tempo include "Crazy in Love" and "Dancing Queen."

70% of Cardiac Arrests Happen at Home

The life you save with CPR is most likely to be someone you love — a spouse, parent, or child. That's why everyone should learn CPR.

Hands-Only CPR Works

You don't need mouth-to-mouth! Hands-only CPR (just chest compressions) has been shown to be equally effective for adult sudden cardiac arrest in the first few minutes.

Women's Hearts Are Different

Women are more likely to experience "silent" heart attacks with symptoms like nausea, back pain, and fatigue rather than classic chest pain. Knowing these signs saves lives.

CPR for Kids Is Different

For infants, use two fingers in the center of the chest. For children, use one hand. The compression depth and breath ratio also differ — that's why proper training matters!

AEDs Are Incredibly Simple

Automated External Defibrillators talk you through every step. You can't accidentally shock someone who doesn't need it — the device analyzes the heart rhythm automatically.

Good Samaritan Laws Protect You

In all 50 states, Good Samaritan laws protect people who give CPR in good faith. You cannot be sued for trying to save someone's life. Don't be afraid to act!

Vital Information

Know the Signs. Save a Life.

Understanding these critical signs can make all the difference in an emergency.

Heart Attack Signs

A heart attack is a circulation problem. Know the symptoms:

  • Chest pressure, squeezing, or pain lasting more than a few minutes
  • Pain radiating to jaw, neck, back, shoulders, or arms
  • Shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness
  • Women may experience unusual fatigue, indigestion, or sleep disturbances

Call 911 immediately. Do NOT drive yourself.

Cardiac Arrest Signs

Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. It's sudden and deadly:

  • Sudden collapse or loss of responsiveness
  • No normal breathing or only gasping
  • No pulse or heartbeat detectable
  • May occur with no warning signs at all

Start CPR IMMEDIATELY. Use an AED as soon as possible.

CPR in 3 Simple Steps

1

Call 911

If someone collapses and is unresponsive, call 911 immediately or ask a bystander to call and find an AED.

2

Push Hard & Fast

Place hands in the center of the chest. Push at least 2 inches deep, at 100-120 compressions per minute. Allow full chest recoil.

3

Use an AED

As soon as an AED arrives, turn it on and follow the voice prompts. Continue CPR between AED analyses until help arrives.
